Boy, if you don't get your shit together they'll find your body at the bottom of Lake Winnipesaukee.
Or so some would have you think. Others (few as they may be) see some political brilliance in the New Hampshire Senator’s non-vote over the stimulus bill. Citing a conflict of interest, the soon-to-be Commerce Secretary has royally pissed off those on the right, as well as those on the left, by not taking a stand on the bill. Those on the right think that if he’s not going to act like a Senator and vote on bills, then he should quit now and let somebody take his place. Fair enough, though that kind of talk is rather funny coming from a party who just put their faith behind the man with the worst Senate attendance record.
Those on the left think that if this guy is going to be working in the administration, he better damn well start acting like it. This is the second time in as many weeks that Gregg has created a minor furor over and caused the Obama administration a lot of agita. I wonder if Obama’s learned his across-the-aisles lesson yet? It’s just not going to happen with (in my best Daniel Day-Lewis There Will Be Blood voice) these… people.
The counter-argument to all this is that Gregg was saving his own ass. If he were to vote “yes” on the bill, Republican senators would block his appointment. And if he were to vote “nay” on it, well let’s just say whatever-sized shoe Rahm Emanuel wears would be up Gregg’s ass before the final tally was even called. By not voting, he lived to see another day, most likely within the cushy confines of the Obama administration.
Still, I do feel bad for the people of New Hampshire. Not that Gregg’s vote would really matter either way, but if there’s one state that is actually relatively politically-active, it’s New Hampshire. It’s got to kill the populace to know that their sitting-Senator is no longer looking out for them, but for himself.
